Lithium Technologies has unveiled the first three modules of a new Social Customer Suite based on its Scout Labs acquisition undertaken in May. The modules comprise Lithium Awareness, which enables brands to run lead generation programmes across multiple social channels in a bid to boost conversion rates; Commerce, which hosts customer reviews and feedback, and Service, which again enables organisations to implement service initiatives across a range of social media platforms.

Ning Gets Its Groupon On

Groupon and Ning are launching an affiliate beta program. Anyone who runs a Ning social network can now add a Groupon widget with geo-targeted daily deals. They will get a cut of any Groupon deals purchased through their Ning sites. The program will be rolled out as an option for all Ning sites by early next year.

Ning networks have been shut down. The reason that Ning made this decision boils down to numbers: 300,000 free networks previously on Ning only brought 20% of revenue and 25% of traffic. The rest came from the 15,000 paying customers. In addition to not making Ning any money, these free networks “sucked down its most expensive resources — headcount, bandwidth and infrastructure — at a rate Ning could not support.”

Ning, crossed the two-million network mark this month. Co-founded by Marc Andreessen, Ning helps people create niche social networks around special interests from social justice to late-night comedy shows. The Palo Alto-based company now has 41 million members across its networks, adding 1 million new communities since April of last year. The company also retooled its Twitter integration today, letting people change the attribution on their tweets.
